The C&NW RR - We’re just a bunch of guys who have never really grown up. We get together and play with our toy trains. We have no real lives to speak of. We can’t keep women around because we haven’t matured properly...and we have a need to be judged solely by the size of our toys!
OK now for the real stuff - Our little toy trains are 1/8th size, 1 1/2” scale(1 1/2”=1’) models of steam and diesel locomotives. The steam locomotives are called “live steam”. They are steam powered models that use real fire to heat water that generates steam to propel the locomotive.
The diesel locomotives are powered by gas or electric motors using on-board batteries. These “toys” weight between 200 and 1,000 lbs. Most of our engines have been built by us. We have a number of 1/8 size, 1 1/2” scale railroad cars also built by us.
Our trains run on 7 1/2” gauge aluminum rail track that is custom built by us permanently laid on the ground using the same methods(read here civil engineering and a lot of earth moving!) as full size railroads.
The best thing about our “toy” trains.......You ride on them!!
We currently have about 1,400’ of 7 1/2” gauge Double Track Mainline. There is approximately another 1,000’ of sidings and yard trackage for almost 3,800’ of total operational track on the ground. There is a large storage building, a hydraulic lift track(to load and unload locomotives), 10 elevated steaming tracks and a turntable.
A core group of seven individuals have built and maintain The Cheap and Nothing Wasted Railroad. This is NOT a club. It is a private track NOT Open to the public. We do welcome other 1 1/2” scale railroad modelers by INVITATION ONLY.
Oh, about the women thing......Most of us have wonderful spouses that support this crazy hobby and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with it. Whenever we have a “run-day”, the girls turn it into a cookout party. The ladies also run the trains. After all, we may not have totally matured but we do believe in women’s rights......What would “Tim the Tool Man Taylor” say???? “Women.........Auugghh???”.
The Cheap and Nothing Wasted has become the catalyst for many social activities. There are many Friday or Saturday evenings when a few of us, along with our spouses, meet for dinner and drinks at local establishments or each other’s homes.
Each year, The Cheap and Nothing Wasted hosts an invitation only meet/BBQ party which is attended by close to 200 people. Modelers from as far away as Western Iowa bring their engines. We have one engineer that comes from Florida!! There are normally 10 to 15 steam locomotives, around 8 gas/electric locomotives and stationary steam engines attending. It’s a full day of “playing trains” and socializing. The day ends with a huge bonfire and fireworks in the evening. It’s quite the event.
As you can tell from our name and the opening statement, we’re all about a good time. The most important thing we do at The Cheap and Nothing Wasted Railroad is have FUN. Preserving and passing on the knowledge of operating and maintaining steam powered engines to another generation is a major side benefit..
The Cheap and Nothing Wasted Trackage is located in the far Southwest Suburbs of Chicago near Plainfield, IL.
THIS IS A PRIVATE TRACK NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
